The State of Louisiana, along with the Friends of the Eddie G. Robinson Museum, initiated a fundraising campaign to establish a museum to honor the legacy of NCAA Division I football’s all-time winningest coach. As part of the effort , Stephen Evans, President of The Remedy, was tasked with providing public relations and marketing support around the kickoff of the fundraising effort and the evenutal grand opening of the museum. A kickoff press conference was planned in conjunction with the Bayou Classic in New Orleans, black college football’s greatest rivalry game pitting Robinson’s Grambling State University Tigers against Southern University. Speakers at the event included Louisiana governor Kathleen Blanco, Louisiana state senators and representatives, city mayors, the Louisiana Secretary of State, and keynote speaker and former Saturday Night Live cast member Garrett Morris, a Louisiana native and long-time admirer of Coach Robinson.
Associated with the kickoff event, a public service announcement was produced that featured Super Bowl MVP and Grambling star quarterback Doug Williams, NBA legend Charles Barkley, and legendry Penn St . football coach Joe Paterno. Following a successful fundraising campaign, Stephen provided public relations support for the events surrounding the museum’s grand opening, which featured keynote speakers Mike Tomlin, head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly, among other sports, entertainment, and political dignitaries. Unfortunately, between the time the fundraising effort was initiated and the eventual opening of the museum, Coach Robinson passed away. At that time, Stephen was asked to write the official statement on behalf of Coach Robinson’s widow Doris and the Robinson family for distribution to friends, supporters, and the local, state, national, and international media.
News of the launch of the fundraising campaign was picked up by scores of media outlets throughout North America, including some of the United States’ most respected and well-known news entities. A similar, if not greater, media pick-up came with the news of the museum’s opening. Additionally, the PSA supporting the museum’s establishment and associated fundraising effort was aired by nearly all of North America’s sports channels, including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Classic, Fox Sports Network (and its many regional channels), NFL Network, Cox Sports Television, Sunshine Network, Charter Sports Southeast, Versus, Comcast Sports, and Columbus Sports Network, among others.
